Chronemics is the study of the role of time in communication.

These scholars, however, also recognize that there is considerable variety in how they and their colleagues conceptually and operationally define this area of study.

Other prominent subcategories include haptics (touch), kinesics (body movement), vocalics (paralanguage), and proxemics (the use of space).

Chronemics can be briefly and generally defined as the study of human tempo as it related to human communication.

So a brief exchange with a grocery store clerk who you don’t know wouldn’t be considered interpersonal communication, because you and the clerk are not influencing each other in significant ways.
